Airport Rail Station on Track

Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council’s Planning Committee have given the green light for a new rail station which could bring improved access to Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield.

The Airport has welcomed the Council’s decision, which will see the opening of the station move a step closer with the project now progressing to the next stage involving detailed rail investigations.

The new station would be located on the Doncaster to Lincoln rail line immediately adjacent to the Airport site and would provide improved public transport access from across the region for the growing number of Airport passengers as well as serve the growing residential developments close to the Airport.

The development of the station forms part of the Airport’s Surface Access Strategy which looks at ways to reduce the reliance on the private motor car for access to the Airport by both passengers and employees. The proposed station should help to further boost the numbers who already choose to use public transport and alternative modes of travel.

Clare Wilson, the Airport’s Environment Manager commented, “We are naturally delighted with the news that this important new facility becomes nearer to reality. Some 7% of Airport passengers already use public transport to access the Airport, which is really positive when you consider that the Airport has only been open for just over three years.

We are confident that this future enhancement will see the Airport remain ‘on track’ to increase public transport usage further and continue to improve access for our passengers across the region.”
